Phew & Yippee

First of all…. Phew!
well that’s that for this year.
It's been a while since I've posted - but after the AtoZ Challenge I really needed a breather. I wasn’t as prepared for AtoZ this year, and using a new blogging platform has taken me a while to get used to. BUT! I made it, albeit it with a few cheats.
In case you missed it - it was all about characters from The Long & The Short of it. You can read the first installment here.
It was a great experience. I had to go back and read the stories again, to make sure that I got my facts right and that I actually KNOW my characters :) It was a good challenge – and it got me to work on some new stuff - having run out of characters by the time I got to X, Y, Z... I wrote something brand new for that. Click here to read it if you'd like.
The daily nudge to write was what I really needed after a difficult start to 2014.
The other promise I made to myself (or threat I made against myself) was that I should enter some competitions this year.
Competitions for me are hard. Cos when I don’t get anywhere I feel really bad about my writing. There have been regular smaller competitions that I stopped entering because I wasn’t getting anywhere. Last year I entered the RTÉ competition with a story that ended up in the book – The Disappearance of Bernie Francis. I struggled and wrestled with it for months. I didn’t get anywhere in the competition and was so disappointed. But I didn’t let it stop me.
Finally I’ve stopped letting stuff stop me – if you get my drift :)
And my Yippee! moment is that is that I was a runner up in a competiton. I’m so encouraged that my story was received so well. It's on the wonderful blog of Tara Sparling. She acquired the help of an anonymous judge - I feel very privelged to have been placed in the competition. You can read the story here - you'll also find the other runner up and the first prize winner on the site too.
I've another competition entry in and I’m looking forward to the Newbridge Junefest at the beginning of next month. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 3 highly commended entries will get to read their story. So even if I don’t get placed I’ll still have an opportunity to hear some great stories.
So, I'm up off the mat; and glad to be so :)
What are you up to? You can drop over to my fb page or tweet @amowriting Would love to hear from you.
